FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Local Activists plan Queer Rights Rally in downtown Joliet
Chicago, Illinois – July 3, 2009 – Local activists from Chicago and the Joliet area are planning to hold a Queer Rights Rally in support of local, state, and federal changes that would ensure the civil rights of LGBTQ-identified citizens.
The rally and march through downtown Joliet is set for Saturday, July 18, 2009 and will highlight the need for the Obama administration to repeal the Defense Against Marriage Act and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and Congress to pass the Employment Non-Discriminstion Act. The rally will also call upon Illinois representatives such as Tom Cross and Emily Klunk-McAsey to support SB1716, the bill that would grant some protections for same-sex couples in the form of civil unions.
The rally will focus not only on legislation on the state and federal level, but will also concentrate on the local needs of LGBTQ people in Joliet. Speakers will address such issues as safe schools, homophobia, and transphobia in the Joliet-area.
Rally-attendees will meet in downtown Joliet at the CAAN Community Center at 68 N Chicago St then march through downtown Joliet and end the Will County Courthouse. All are welcome to attend. Those traveling from Chicago for the event are encouraged to buy a 5-dollar weekend pass and catch the 12:30 Metra from the La Salle Street Station (414 South La Salle St).
This event is co-sponsored by Chicago’s Gay Liberation Network and Joliet’s Community Alliance and Action Network.
